I guess I was a weird kid, but I always fantasized about having a place I could go where I could say, “Give me the usual,” and they’d know what I was talking about. There’s something so warm and intimate about that. Anyway, on my way into the office today, I realized I’d achieved that goal. I was waiting in line at the little shop next to my office, listening to the women who work there taking orders. Gladys asked a customer, “Large decaf for you this morning, Mr. Hoffman?”, to which he smiled and replied, “That’d be great, Gladys.” The woman in front of me looked blankly at the menu, prompting Gladys to ask, “No bagel and cream cheese for you this morning?”. The woman smiled and said, “That would be perfect, Gladys. Thank you.” Then it was my turn. Without my even opening my mouth, Gladys turned to her coworker and said, “Mabel, get me security.”
